Morpho-functional asymmetry of the olfactory receptors of the honeybee (Apis mellifera)
ScienceDirect Search: species
Publication year: 2010

Behavioural Brain Research, In Press, Accepted Manuscript, Available online 4 February 2010

Lateralization, i.e. the different functional specialisation of the left and right side of the brain, has been documented in many vertebrate species and, recently, in invertebrate species as well. In the Honeybee, Apis mellifera L. (Hymenoptera Apidae), it has been shown that short term (< 1h) recall of olfactory memories would be possible mainly from the right rather than from the left antenna. Here we confirmed this finding showing that recall of the olfactory memory 1h after training to associate (-)-linalool, a floral volatile compound, with a sugar reward, as revealed by the bee extending its proboscis when presented with...

Identification and characterization of the parasitic wasp Nasonia defensins: Positive selection targeting the functional region?
ScienceDirect Search: species
Publication year: 2010
Source:
Developmental & Comparative Immunology, In Press, Uncorrected Proof, Available online 2 February 2010
Bin, Gao , Shunyi, Zhu
Defensin is a crucial component of innate immunity highly conserved across different insect orders. Here, we report identification and characterization of defensins in the parasitic wasp Nasonia (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae). In comparison with those in the non-parasitic insect Apis mellifera, two different subtypes of defensins (defensin1 and defensin2) have undergone independent gene duplication to create a mutigene family of five members (named 1-1, 1-2, 2-1, 2-2 and 2-3) in the Nasonia lineage. Such duplication occurred before the divergence of three sibling species (N. vitripennis, N. giraulti and N. longicornis) and the duplicated genes was subsequently subjected to positive selection at the...

Moribund Ants Leave Their Nests to Die in Social Isolation

Animal societies provide perfect conditions for the spread of infections and are therefore expected to employ mechanisms that reduce the probability of transmitting pathogens to group members [1], [2], [3] and [4]. Death in nature rarely results from old age but commonly results from diseases. Leaving one's group to die in seclusion might be an efficient way of minimizing the risk of infecting kin. Anecdotal observations of moribund individuals deserting from their groups exist for several species, including humans (e.g., [5]), but have rarely been substantiated by quantitative analysis. Furthermore, to confirm that dying in solitude has evolved because of...

Highlights: ► Ants actively leave their nests before death and break up all social contact ► Social withdrawal is not due to manipulation through pathogens or parasites ► Instead, it appears to be an altruistic act of the ants themselves

From seed production to seedling establishment: Important steps in an invasive process

It is widely accepted that exotic invasive species are one of the most important ecological and economic problems. Reproductive and establishment traits are considered key features of a population expansion process, but few works have studied many of these simultaneously. This work examines how large the differences are in reproductive and establishment traits between two Fabaceae, the exotic invasive, Gleditsia triacanthos and the native, Acacia aroma. Gleditsia is a serious leguminous woody invader in various parts of the world and Acacia is a common native tree of Argentina. Both species have similar dispersal mechanisms and their reproductive phenology overlaps. We...

Pesticides are an important potential cause of biodiversity and pollinator decline. Little is known about the impacts of pesticides on wild pollinators in the field. Insect pollinators were sampled in an agricultural system in Italy with the aim of detecting the impacts of pesticide use. The insecticide fenitrothion was over 150 times greater in toxicity than other pesticides used in the area, so sampling was set up around its application. Species richness of wild bees, bumblebees and butterflies were sampled at three spatial scales to assess responses to pesticide application: (i) the ‘field’ scale along pesticide drift gradients; (ii) the...

Nature versus nurture in social insect caste differentiation

Recent evidence for genetic effects on royal and worker caste differentiation from diverse social insect taxa has put an end to the view that these phenotypes stem solely from a developmental switch controlled by environmental factors. Instead, the relative influences of genotypic and environmental effects on caste vary among species, ranging from largely environmentally controlled phenotypes to almost purely genetic systems. Disentangling the selective forces that generate variation for caste predisposition will require characterizing the genetic mechanisms underlying this variation, and identifying particular life-history strategies and kin structures associated with strong genetic effects on caste.

The ability to distinguish between members of a social group and unfamiliar individuals is a critical element of social behaviour. Social insects can differentiate between nestmates and non-nestmates via recognition cues, which in most species are cuticular hydrocarbons. Cuticular hydrocarbon patterns are altered by genotype and environmental conditions, but it is unclear whether colony social conditions can also affect nestmate interactions. Honeybee queens produce pheromones that regulate many aspects of worker behaviour, physiology and colony organization. A five-component blend, queen mandibular pheromone (QMP), produces many of the effects of a live queen. We found that QMP treatment alters how resident...

While many domestic and laboratory animals recognize familiar humans, such ability in wild animals is only anecdotally known. Here we demonstrate experimentally that a cognitively advanced, social bird, the American crow, Corvus brachyrhynchos, quickly and accurately learns to recognize the face of a dangerous person and continues to do so for at least 2.7 years. We exposed wild crows to a novel ‘dangerous face’ by wearing a unique face mask as we trapped, banded and released 7–15 birds at five sites near Seattle, WA, U.S.A. After trapping, crows consistently used harsh vocalizations to scold and mob people of different sizes,...

Correlations between brain or brain component size and behavioral measures are frequently studied by comparing different animal species, which sometimes introduces variables that complicate interpretation in terms of brain function. Here, we have analyzed the brain composition of honey bees (Apis mellifera) that have been individually tested in an olfactory learning paradigm. We found that the total brain size correlated with the bees’ learning performance. Among different brain components, only the mushroom body, a structure known to be involved in learning and memory, showed a positive correlation with learning performance. In contrast, visual neuropils were relatively smaller in bees that...

Maximum foraging ranges in solitary bees: only few individuals have the capability to cover long foraging distances

To preserve populations of endangered bee species, sound knowledge of their maximum foraging distance between nest and host plants is crucial. Previous investigations predicted maximum foraging distances of 100–200m for small bee species and up to 1100m for very large species based on mainly indirect methods. The present study applied a new and direct approach to experimentally investigate maximum foraging distances in solitary bees. One endangered and two common species of different body sizes, all of which restrict pollen foraging to a single plant genus, were established in a landscape lacking their specific host plants. Females were forced to collect...

The removal of previously stored rival sperm and increased ejaculate expenditure are effective male sperm competition tactics to ensure paternity. We examined both behaviours and their interaction for male cuttlefish, Sepia lycidas, as a strategic investment. Males increased the duration of sperm removal and the number of ejaculations per mating when they were not the last male who had mated with the current partner. These responses would decrease the number of rival sperm and increase the male's own sperm in the fertilization area. Recognition of the female's mating history appeared to result from close mate guarding during successive matings. Moreover,...
